Staying Healthy Through the New Year

December 27, 2017

Each New Year’s people all around America make resolutions, most often to be “healthier” or more in shape. Unfortunately, these resolutions often don’t stick and by February everyone is back to their usual habits. Instead of focusing on a resolution this year, why not make small adjustments to stay healthy throughout the entire 2018 year and beyond? Here are some tips for staying healthy provided by Memorial Heights ER:

Eat your breakfast.

For some reason, people seem to think a cup of coffee is an adequate substitution for a nutritional breakfast. Unfortunately this is not the case, our body (and brain) needs food to function and operate.

Avoid “midnight” snacks.

For many Americans, extra time is a rarity and we often find ourselves eating late at night. You should however try to stop eating AT LEAST 3 hours before you go to bed. This can help you sleep better and even lose weight!

Eat in more often!

There is a reason fast food is fast, it is typically microwaved and full of horrible ingredients. We recommend preparing your own lunch (breakfast and dinner as well!), not only can it reduce cost but it typically is much healthier.

Add more plant-based foods to your diet.

Foods such as fruits and vegetables are typically much healthier than other options. We recommend eating fruits and vegetables instead of snacks and making sure you include them with each meal!

Get enough sleep.

Another common trend among Americans, sleep deprivation. Not getting adequate sleep each night can increase your risk for anxiety, depression and even heart complications! We recommend 7 hours of sleep a night.

Drink more water!

Did you know that 75% of Americans don’t drink enough water each day? Water is necessary for digestion and the absorption of vitamins and nutrients, so put down the soda and try drinking a bit more water every single day.
