If an Emergency Strikes, Will You Be Prepared?

December 12, 2017

Accidents always seem to happen when we least expect them, and sometimes it seems that they happen more when we are unprepared. But what should you do to make sure you are prepared?

Step One: Find A Good Emergency Room

Finding a facility that feels right for you and your family is absolutely necessary. The ideal facility is full of friendly, warm-hearted individuals who just so happen to also be experts in the area you need at the time of an emergency. It’s important to find a place full of professionals who you can trust and who are close by; Memorial Heights ER can provide the convenience and comfort you need.

Step Two: Be Prepared

It’s impossible to be prepared if you don’t know what to do. The first step in being able to help someone when an emergency occurs is to have the necessary knowledge.

In Case of a Serious Physical Injury

Physical injuries make up a large percentage of the people who are admitted to the ER. These instances can be very serious and traumatic for everyone involved. Here is a simple guide of what to do if an emergency strikes:

  • If the person is unresponsive or not breathing you should begin CPR immediately and call 911 (If you are not trained in CPR, then find somebody who is properly trained to perform it).
  • If there is significant bleeding, a limb looks deformed, a bone has pierced the skin, you suspect broken bones in the neck or back, or if the extremity of an injured limb turns blue or cold, then you should call 911 right away.
  • If the person is conscious, you should stop any bleeding as fast as possible by applying pressure to the wound.
  • Immobilize the injured area and wait for help if the broken bone is serious. Moving around can cause further damage.
  • Apply ice packs to the injury site as this will limit damaging swelling and inflammation as well as reduce pain.
