The average human body is made of 50-75% water, so what exactly happens when you don’t have enough in your body? You can become dehydrated, leading to even more serious health complications. With summer right around the corner, making sure you and your loved ones stay hydrated is extremely important. Make sure you all know the signs of dehydration!
How Much Water Should I Drink Daily?
The most common recommendation is to drink six to eight glasses (8 oz) of water each day. But depending on your health, lifestyle and location you may need more or less water. Patients who exercise often, are sick or even pregnant may need to consume more water in order to keep health optimal. Infants, the elderly, chronically ill and those who work outside may be more susceptible to dehydration and need to adjust their water intake. If you are concerned you or a loved one is not drinking enough water and may be dehydrated, here are some of the signs and symptoms to be on the lookout for.
Signs of Dehydration in Children
- Mouth/Tongue appears to be dry
- Absence of tears when crying
- Diaper has been dry for 3+ hours
- Cheeks/Eyes appear sunken in
- Irritability/Restlessness
Signs of Dehydration in Adults
- Extremely thirsty
- Urination is less frequent
- Urine is dark in color
- Fatigue
- Feeling dizzy/faint
- Confusion
