5 Common Childhood Illnesses: Back to School

We are officially well into the back to school season and this season brings a wide range of new things, including different common childhood illnesses. It is always best to be prepared, especially when it comes to your children’s health and wellbeing. Our team at the Memorial Heights ER offers continued education for our patients in order to provide families with the best quality of care. Continue reading on to learn of five common childhood illnesses that affect many youths during the back to school season.

Below are the five most common childhood illnesses that could affect your children this school year:

  • Common Cold. The common cold encompasses a huge number of viruses and often affects children much more than adults. The most common symptoms that go along with the common cold are sneezing, coughing, runny nose, and a sore throat. If a high fever begins or symptoms do not seize after two weeks, then you should contact a doctor for help.
  • Ear Infections. When bacteria become trapped in the tubes of the ears, then infection can start. Ear pain and a fever are the most common side effects with an ear infection.
  • Fifth Disease. This disease includes rashes, a slight fever, and cold symptoms. It is typically a mild condition that also brings mild joint pain.
  • Noroviruses. Many people often mistake this as the stomach flu. The symptoms include stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Low-grade fevers, headaches, and body aches are also common. Noroviruses are easily transmitted between individuals. Dehydration poses the most serious risk.
  • Strep throat. Strep throat is incredibly contagious and includes painful throat and fever symptoms. Antibiotics are the best way to recover from strep throat quickly. Teaching your child how to effectively wash their hands will help to reduce the risk of illnesses.

Continue to educate your children and yourself on how to take care of your bodies and reduce the risk of illness. Contact our Memorial Heights ER team for more information regarding how to protect your body and keep your children safe.
